Pierre Pienaar, president of WPO congratulates Mr. Miklós Galli for his lifetime achievement award

The World Packaging Organisation was founded in 1968 in Tokyo by packaging specialists in order to contribute to the living conditions of people by improving the general standards of packaging. The Organisation has been serving this noble cause for 50 years, by organizing and funding packaging training courses and by assisting the establishment of national packaging institutions in underdeveloped or developing countries. In the developed countries, WPO is supporting life-long packaging education programs in the frame of the “training for trainers” program.
After several decades of operation, the World Packaging Organisation awarded the “Lifetime Achievement in Packaging Awards” for the first time in 2017 with the aim of showing respect and gratitude for the outstanding professional, public and awareness-raising life work of colleagues in the packaging industry.
The jury of 11 members selected from the world’s 7 great geographical segments awarded this year’s Lifetime Achievement in Packaging Award to Mr. Miklós Galli, retired CEO of Dunapack Magyarország, former president of the Hungarian Packaging and Material Handling Association.
It is difficult to briefly sum up Mr. Miklós Galli’s achievements. Thanks to his professional career, the Hungarian corrugated paper production was successfully adapted from a state corporate form to the circumstances of market economy, and Dunapack Hungary, which was managed by him, has maintained its market leader position in Hungary for decades. He carried out the successful privatization of the company with special circumspection. As a result, the Austrian Prinzhorn Group is now one of the Austrian company groups investing the greatest amount of capital and employing the highest number of people in Hungary. Besides paper production, the massive portfolio of the Group includes packaging material production, waste collection and waste recovery.
Mr. Miklós Galli’s professional influence extends beyond Hungary. Within the Prinzhorn Group, as leader of the Packaging Division established by him, he acquired several European corrugated paper production companies, and by means of developments made them successful parts of the Group. The magnitude of his work is best shown by the fact that the packaging division of the Group was named after the Hungarian Dunapack.
Mr. Miklós Galli’s professional and public work was never limited to Hungary. He served as president of Hungarian Packaging and Material Handling Association for 21 years, moreover, he was vice president of the Confederation of Hungarian Employers and Industrialists for a long time. Mr. Galli was president of the Hungarian Environmental Committee, advisory body of the government, for several terms. He was Board Member of the European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers (FEFCO) for 14 years, and president of Alliabox, European Corrugated Board Producer’s Association for 3 years.
Mr. Miklós Galli’s work and character can be a role model for multiple generations not only in Hungary but also in Europe, as well as on the other four continents of the world.
We congratulate Mr. Galli on receiving the well-deserved Lifetime Achievement Award in Packaging!
